Even If God Doesn’t

“Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.”        (Jeremiah 32:17)

God is like no other god.  He is the one true God and throughout the Bible He proved His divinity and supremacy with miraculous power.  He did mind-blowing things that astounded on-lookers, causing believers (and haters) to immediately fall to the ground in awe and worship.  One such story is found in Daniel 3, the true story of 3 young men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who refused to worship any other god or any person who demanded their worship.  Why?  Because they were committed to obeying the first and second of the Ten Commandments:  “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:3-6)

For the young men, the consequence for refusing to worship the god of Babylon was to be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire.  Their response is one of the greatest statements of faith in the Old Testament.  Basically, when the King gave them a second chance to bow down, they said “No way are we going to worship you or your god, and fyi, we are not afraid!  Our God, the one we serve, is able to deliver us, we believe He will, but even if He doesn’t, we will only worship the one true God.” (paraphrase of Daniel 3:16-18)

Today, whatever is going on in your life, place your faith and hope in God.  Cling to Him!  Run away from whatever is enticing you away from Him.  He wants to show His power, His “like no other god” greatness through your acts of faith. Stand for Him, even if the consequences seem severe. If you read the full story in Daniel 3, you will learn that a fourth “person” joined them in the furnace.  I wonder who that was?

May God strengthen your faith today!
