I Got This!

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  (Psalm 46:10)

We all face difficult situations.  No one is immune.  Our natural reaction is to tighten our jaw, steady ourselves and face the storm with determination and grit.  We often respond to tough times with an “I got this” mentality.  That’s until we feel overwhelmed and desperate.  Then we think, “I don’t have this, I can’t solve this, this is way too big for me, I need help.”  The psalmist in Psalm 46 is evidently overwhelmed with unending, oppressive, ravaging wars.  Read the entire 11 verses, and apply it to whatever battle you are facing.  Verse 1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  Notice how the psalmist  speaks third person about God, and then in verse 10 God breaks in and speaks for Himself:  “Be still and know that I am God!”  Perhaps you need God to break in on your struggle and say, “Be still, I got this!”

So, what does this verse mean and how can we apply it to our lives?

Be still means to cease striving, to let down your weapons.  It doesn’t mean to sit quietly in God’s presence, though that’s always good.  Here God is saying, “cease your frantic worry and activity, stop trying to fix something you cannot fix.”

Know that I am God means to see beyond yourself, to be aware of the bigger picture, to acknowledge God is present, all powerful, able to win any battle.  When God says, “I WILL BE exalted among the nations, I WILL BE exalted in the earth,” He is saying “Nothing is too difficult for me!”  Or simplified, “I GOT THIS!”

So, what do we do?
-Admit our inability to solve the issue.  That doesn’t mean to admit defeat, but rather to claim victory.
– Stop worrying and allowing fear to control us.  Stop frantic behavior. Stop trying to control everything.
– Cry out to God in prayer.  Enlarge our view of God — He is Almighty, All-knowing, All Present.  He is our Defender.
